Groin strain forces debutant Shardul Thakur off the field

Debutant Shardul Thakur bowled ten deliveries on the opening morning of the second Test against Windies in Hyderabad before hobbling off with discomfort around the right groin region, hinting at a possible relapse of the injury that he sustained in the Asia Cup.

In Dubai, Thakur complained of “right hip and groin soreness” post the game against Hong Kong were he bowled four overs for no wicket.

Here, bowling the fourth over of the Windies’ innings, the 26-year-old finished his run-up with a grimace and physio Patrick Farhart was immediately summoned. After a brief chat, the bowler left the field. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled the final two deliveries of the over.

“Shardul Thakur has gone for scans. He will not take the field today. An update on his participation for the rest of the Test will be taken after looking at the scans and after being assessed by the team management,” read a statement from the team.

Half an hour before picking up the injury, Thakur became the 294th player to represent India in Tests after the team management decided to rest Mohammed Shami, who played each of the five Tests in England as well as the opener of this series in Rajkot.
